Why Barnsdale Gardens is the Garden Lover’s Must-See
Why Barnsdale Gardens is the Garden Lover’s Must-See: As English Tourism Week blooms from 13 to 22 March, Barnsdale Gardens is delighted to celebrate its place within the UK’s vibrant tourism landscape. With an abundance of inspiring destinations to explore nationwide, Barnsdale truly shines as the largest collection of individually designed gardens in Britain, a place where creativity, nature, and tranquillity meet.
Founded in 1983 by the late Geoff Hamilton, a visionary gardener and champion of sustainable, peat-free and chemical-free gardening, Barnsdale Gardens is beautifully set in Rutland, East Midlands. Today, the gardens continue to thrive under the expert stewardship of Geoff’s son, Nick Hamilton, remaining a firm favourite for gardening enthusiasts from across the UK and beyond.

Why Barnsdale Gardens is the Garden Lover’s Must-See
Spread across 38 exquisitely designed gardens, Barnsdale offers an inspiring journey through diverse planting styles and garden design. Wander through the peaceful Japanese Garden, with its graceful cherry blossoms and calming Zen influences, or admire the timeless symmetry of the Formal Pool and Knot Garden, where elegant topiary and reflective water features create a striking visual centrepiece.
Wildlife lovers will be captivated by the Stream and Bog Garden, originally created for Gardeners’ World in 1995. This garden beautifully demonstrates how water features can be introduced into average-sized spaces, encouraging pond life and boosting biodiversity while remaining practical and achievable.
After a leisurely stroll, visitors can relax and refuel at the Helenium Tea Room, celebrated for its delicious Afternoon Teas, with a tempting selection of vegetarian and vegan options available. On March 15th, there is also a Mother’s Day Afternoon Tea and a Mother’s Day Dinner, both of which are available for bookings now at heleniumtearoom.co.uk/events
For those looking to deepen their creative or gardening skills, Barnsdale offers a varied programme of workshops throughout the year, including gardening, painting, and willow weaving.
