Geoff founded Barnsdale Gardens in 1983, and just two years later, Gardeners’ World made the gardens its new home. From Barnsdale, Geoff’s friendly, practical and down-to-earth approach to gardening reached millions of viewers across the UK, helping to make gardening accessible and enjoyable for everyone.

The Rutland Flower Show is an annual three-day horticultural celebration held at Rutland Showground in Oakham. The event brings together regional gardening talent and national flower clubs, with competitive displays, show gardens, celebrity gardener talks, plant shopping, local crafts and family entertainment.

Celebrating Geoff Hamilton at the Rutland Flower Show

The Barnsdale Gardens team marked Geoff’s enduring legacy throughout the three-day event, sharing their knowledge, passion and memories with visitors and celebrating the principles he championed throughout his career.

A particular highlight was a special conversation between Nick Hamilton and BBC Gardeners’ World presenter Adam Frost, who had also worked at Barnsdale alongside Nick and Geoff. The discussion explored Geoff’s life, work and enduring influence on generations of gardeners.

The conversation also highlighted the continued relevance of Geoff’s approach to gardening. His emphasis on practical gardening, working with nature and encouraging people to grow without fear of getting things wrong continues to resonate with gardeners more than three decades after his death.

The event allowed visitors to meet members of the Barnsdale team, discover more about the gardens and celebrate Geoff’s lasting contribution to horticulture.

As Barnsdale Gardens continues to evolve while remaining true to Geoff’s environmental and practical principles, the Rutland Flower Show provided a fitting opportunity to celebrate the life, work and enduring legacy of the People’s Gardener, Geoff Hamilton.

The Gold and Best in Show award offered a particularly poignant tribute on what would have been Geoff’s 90th birthday, celebrating not only the man himself, but the gardening philosophy and inspiration he left behind.
