Burpee Europe Trends – Make a splash on your patio or balcony!

Gardening trends come and go, but one that is here to stay and has been growing ever bigger in popularity has been that of growing ornamentals and edibles in pots and containers.

The Burpee Europe team have had a cracking few years making sure that all the grow your own lovers out there have seeds a plenty to sow and grow. The team also feel that those with smaller urban gardens, or even just a patio or balcony should still be able to enjoy an abundance of beautiful Burpee veg and flower bounty.

No room for vines? Bush types take one-third of the space, so they’re great for containers and raised beds. You won’t believe the large number of crisp, bright green 20–25 cm slicers you’ll get from the pint-sized plants. Mosaic-resistant and productive, these super cukes are the tops for productivity, flavour and wide adaptability.

• Sowing the last week of April and keeping plants frost free until planting the first week of June should provide a crop from mid-late July.
• ‘Bush Champion’ is a slicing cucumber and has a few hairs on the fruit but these can be easily brushed off by hand and the 12cm long cucumbers can be sliced for use in salads, sandwiches or adding to cocktails

Tomato ‘Cherry Falls’ (seen above)
Ideal for hanging baskets and containers.  This is a compact determinate bush type, which is suitable for hanging baskets and patio containers. The cherry fruit have an excellent flavour and ripen very early in northerly climates. ‘Cherry Falls’ lends itself to successional sowing and produces a flush of ripe fruit over a four to five week period.

• Sow indoors March-April on a warm windowsill.
• Seedlings usually appear in 7-14 days
• Transplant to individual pots as plants get larger
• Plant out in pots or baskets, when frosts are over

Sunflower ‘Sunray’ (brand new for 2023)
Small plants – big smiles! The fun of sunflowers without the towering height. These uniquely dwarf plants branch out to bear up to fourteen flowers each for a period of 8-10 weeks. So easy to grow from seed, we suggest planting in succession to have flowers all summer! Every garden, big or small, has room for this sunflower in patio containers or beds and borders.

• You can sow your sunflower seeds now in pots
• They will be quite happy to begin with even on a windowsill
• Transfer your sunflowers to larger pots as they grow bigger
• Make sure to give them a cane support if needed
