Celebrate the 90th Birthday of Geoff Hamilton

On 15 August 2026, the gardening world will celebrate what would have been the 90th birthday of the much-loved ‘People’s Gardener’, Geoff Hamilton, founder of Barnsdale Gardens and one of the nation’s most respected presenters of BBC Gardeners’ World.

Geoff founded Barnsdale Gardens in 1983, and just two years later Gardeners’ World made the gardens its new home. His friendly, down-to-earth approach quickly made him a favourite with viewers across the UK.

From Barnsdale, Geoff created and developed a series of inspirational gardens, experimenting with plants, themes and practical ideas that encouraged millions of people to get outside and discover the joys of gardening for themselves. It was here that he earned the affectionate title of the ‘People’s Gardener’…a legacy that continues to inspire visitors to Barnsdale Gardens today.

A passionate advocate of organic gardening long before it became mainstream, Geoff believed gardening should work in harmony with nature. Barnsdale became his ‘great experiment’ in peat-free and chemical-free gardening, demonstrating that beautiful, successful gardens could be created using sustainable methods. Those principles remain at the heart of Barnsdale Gardens today, making it one of the UK’s finest examples of organic gardening in practice.

To mark Geoff’s 90th birthday, the first 90 visitors through the gates at Barnsdale Gardens on Saturday, 15th August, will receive free admission.

BBC Four Tribute Programming

BBC Four will also celebrate Geoff’s remarkable life and gardening legacy with a special evening of programmes on Saturday, 1st August, including:

• Gardeners’ World (2016)

Originally broadcast on 5th August 2016, this special edition, presented by Monty Don, marked the 20th anniversary of Geoff Hamilton’s death. It featured Adam Frost returning to Barnsdale Gardens to pay tribute to Geoff and reflect on some of his own earliest gardening memories.

• Gardeners’ World (1986)

Originally broadcast on 1st August 1986, 40 years ago, this classic episode sees Geoff Hamilton, Margaret Waddy and John Kelly presenting from Barnsdale Gardens, with guest fuchsia expert John Smith.

• Geoff Hamilton: A Man and His Garden – The Barnsdale Story

First broadcast on 16th October 1998, this programme from the tribute series, Geoff Hamilton: A Man and His Garden, looks back at the creation, development and enduring legacy of the gardens at Barnsdale.
