Get Growing, Get Glowing!

Get Growing, Get Glowing!: From feeding feathered friends and banishing bothersome bugs, to buffing birch trunks and banking next year’s blooms, there’s always something happening at Barnsdale Gardens.

The dedicated team works year-round to keep their 38 individually designed gardens in the heart of Rutland looking spectacular, and November is no time to slow down.

Here are the top tips from the team at Barnsdale Gardens to help your own little Eden shine this month…

Whitefly: Time to Say Goodbye

Winter brassicas don’t need uninvited guests. Spray early in the morning or on chilly days for maximum impact; it slows the little critters down!

We keep it simple and eco-friendly: a squirt of mild washing-up liquid in a spray bottle. Don’t forget to get underneath those leaves, that’s where the whitefly like to hide and plot their takeover…

A Feast For Feathered Friends

As insects disappear for the winter, our birds need a helping hand. Pop out some feeders now to keep them chirpy and protect your precious berries for longer.

We do battle with a few mischievous grey squirrels here, so we opt for squirrel-proof feeders. Cute? Yes. Sharing? Absolutely not.

Birch Beauty Boost

Our multi-stem silver birch trees in the Country Garden are the winter showstoppers, glowing white against the dark laurel backdrop.

To keep those trunks sparkling, we give them a gentle clean every 2–3 years. A stiff brush and soapy water (or a pressure washer on low setting) lifts algae and reveals their winter glamour. Tree spa day, anyone?

Perfecting Your Laurel

Cherry laurel hedges (Prunus laurocerasus ‘Rotundifolia’) need a little finesse. Hedge trimmers may be tempting, but they leave leaves with brown edges, not the look we’re going for!

Use secateurs on the visible faces and save the trimmer for the tops and unseen sides. It’s a bit of a workout, but the results are worth the sweat.

Seed Saving: Nicotiana Treasure

The majestic Nicotiana sylvestris, tall, elegant, and sweetly scented, is signing off for the season. And now’s the moment to gather seeds for next year’s display.

Grab a paper envelope and tap the seed pods; each one is packed with hundreds of tiny promises of future flowers. Collect a few, and you’ll be floating in seedlings come spring.
