Landscape Institute to launch tools to cut carbon in projects
Landscape Institute to launch tools to cut carbon in projects: The Landscape Institute (LI) will be publishing a suite of free resources to help landscape professionals reduce the carbon emissions in their projects.
Launching this autumn, the tools include a landscape carbon overlay to the RIBA Plan of Work, a new database of landscape carbon tools, and resources for Environmental Product Declarations.

It follows the publication of the Landscape and Carbon Report that the LI produced in collaboration with the British Association of Landscape Industries (BALI) last March.
Recommendations made in the report have been turned into these soon-to-be-available resources by LI members and other industry experts.
The LI’s CEO, Rob Hughes, says they “reflect the strength of our professional community. Collaboration across the built and natural environment is vital in tackling climate change, and these tools will represent another important step in enabling our sector to drive impact.”
Jo Phillips CMLI and Annie Buckle Msc, MDes, Dip.Bot will be launching the Landscape Carbon Overlay to the RIBA Plan of Work in a webinar on 30 September. These will offer stage-by-stage guidance and practical checklists to help cut emissions on every stage of a landscape project’s lifecycle.
“Landscape projects have a critical role to play in averting the worst of our current climate crisis, so ensuring landscape practitioners are equipped with the necessary skills and tools to measure and manage carbon marks the start of a new era for landscape planning and design,” says Phillips.
On 20 November, the LI will launch a new, searchable database to help practitioners find and select the right carbon tools for their projects. It will also publish guidance on Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) and Product Category Rules (PCRs).
