New green student village planned next to Brighton’s Amex Stadium
Development of a new student village, inclusive of green and social spaces next to Brighton’s Amex Stadium, has been approved.
In plans submitted by developer Downing Students, the project will include two six-storey linear wings interlocked with a two-storey central social hub.
The Falmer based project is designed to house over 500 students, with 555 new bedrooms, split into 130 top-end, self contained studio apartments, 397 student cluster rooms, 18 accessible studios and 10 accessible cluster rooms.
Construction on the project will also include soft and hard landscaping, with the development of several green and outdoor spaces for activities, including a yoga and trim trail path.
“We intend to work closely with the University of Sussex and the University of Brighton, to ensure the new accommodation will meet the long-term needs of its student population, whilst also benefiting the wider community,” says Martin Fenlon, associate projects director at Downing Students
“In line with our commitment to sustainability, the scheme will be delivered to a BREEAM Excellent standard.”
Plans were originally rejected by Lewes District Council in October 2022, citing the proposed buildings’ height, bulk and design were an “unacceptable and incongruous feature” on the landscape.
