New study uncovers where our houseplants originate from

Just like with any living thing, learning about the origins of a houseplant can help you care for them and have a greater understanding of their specific needs.

Our favourite houseplants were once found growing wild in some part of the world. With this in mind, the team at WeThrift have uncovered where our houseplants originated from.

According to our research, 36% of the UK’s favourite houseplants originate from Africa. That includes the notorious Snake Plant, which was discovered in West Africa – which is why the houseplant thrives in warm weather and struggles in colder conditions.

South Africa is where the popular Spider Plant originated from, along with the String-of-Pearls, Bird of Paradise and Jade Plant.

Nick Drewe, at WeThrift “Houseplants like the Bird of Paradise favour indirect bright, sunlight as they are used to being shaded by tall trees in the rainforest.

From time to time, they do like being placed in the sunlight, but avoid locating them in direct light for long hours at a time – this will cause their leaves to burn.

While the Areca Palm originates from the more tropical conditions of Madagascar, China is the place of origin for the popular Chinese Money Plant and the Bamboo Plant.”
