The Scent and the Splendour of Sweet Pea Weekend: Who doesn’t adore sweet peas, those fluttery petals of fabulous colour, and that scent? Oh, that scent! These summer superstars are the fragrant darlings of the flower world, and at Barnsdale Gardens, the team are completely smitten.
Join Barnsdale this July for Sweet Pea Weekend, a celebration of all things sweet, scented, and sensational! This garden haven in Rutland will be bursting with colour and perfume as we showcase the many faces of the sweet pea. And trust us…there are way more than you think…

The Scent and the Splendour of Sweet Pea Weekend
Did you know? There’s a sweet pea for every mood:
- Spencer – Big, frilly, and fabulous. Think red carpet in bloom.
- Modern Grandiflora – Sleek, stylish, and stem-perfect for a vase.
- Cuthbertson – Heat-tolerant heroes with a flair for early blooming.
- Dwarf – Pint-sized but powerful, perfect for pots and patios.
- Old Fashioned – Sweetly scented vintage charmers.
- Everlasting Pea – No scent, but endless trailing beauty.
These beautiful blooms can be seen in July in the Kitchen Garden (turned over completely to sweet peas and Dahlias), on The Allotment, in the Parterre and also in the Artisan’s Cottage Garden.
Get the lowdown on these blooming wonders from sweet pea superstar and expert breeder, Stephen Marsland (seen in image above), who’ll be leading gentle walks and giving short talks throughout the weekend.
So come sniff, swoon, and soak up the colour at one of Rutland’s loveliest garden events. Whether you’re a seasoned grower or a curious first-timer, we promise you’ll leave with a spring in your step (and maybe a few seeds in your pocket!).
