The top 5 things to do this spring: Barnsdale Gardens is a true ornamental treat with 38 individually designed gardens and is based in the East Midlands.

In the spring, it really comes into its own and offers not only the glorious spectacle of stunning blooms, shrubs and grasses, but also the chance to learn something new about composting, pruning, willow weaving or even watercolour painting, with a wide range of courses available.

Composting Course on 4th April

Being able to compost all that free material that we generate at home and in the garden is an exciting thought. This course will show you how. Nick Hamilton takes a look at what can and cannot be composted, the requirements of a compost heap, activators, turning a heap and the pros and cons of each type of compost bin. Cherry Blossoms from 15th – 29th April

At this exciting time of year, cherry blossoms burst into life at Barnsdale, along with all the fresh new foliage and drifts of spring flowers throughout the gardens. Two magnificent flowering cherry trees are in full bloom at this time of year in the Rose Garden and there are also more blossoms on show in other areas such as the Japanese Garden and Winter Border.

Spring at Barnsdale: Breakfast and Guided Walk on 16th April

Start your day with a cooked breakfast, then join Nick Hamilton for a very special garden tour to enjoy the highlights of Barnsdale at this inspirational time of year.  Discover why and how the individual gardens were created and find out which plants and trees are at their prime in springtime and the best place to put them in your own garden.

The Modern Estate Garden

The ‘Modern Estate Garden’ is the size of an average housing estate garden and was built with a small family in mind. It incorporates a patio, lawn and enough plant features, borders, scree and pergola to interest any keen but busy gardener. This garden too is resplendent in the spring with Pulmonarias and new shoots from shrubs such as Spiraea.

Vegetables All the Year Round course on 14th May

Aimed at both experienced and novice growers, Nick Hamilton’s course will show you the many ways you can extend your growing season.  Learn all about different vegetable varieties, propagation by seed, growing in beds, storage, and the importance of catch crops.

Lunch in the Helenium Tea Room is included and by the end of the day, you’ll be able to plan your own planting programme to give you home-grown vegetables on the dinner table all year round.
