Webb Cordless Rear Roller Rotary Lawnmower

At Barnsdale Gardens, the gardening team has been kindly given a Webb mower to try out. This one is battery-powered and features a rear roller.

Here’s a brief description of the machine from the Webb website:

Featuring dual 20V batteries, a 38cm cutting width, rear roller, 6 cutting heights, 45 L collection bag and 2-in-1 mulching or collection, it’s ideal for medium lawns. Includes 2 x 4Ah batteries and charger for up to 50 minutes of runtime.”

First impressions 

The mower arrived in a large box. I expected it would need some putting together but was pleased to find this was minimal. The main handles needed assembling with a couple of bolts and quick-release handles; there are a couple of cable tidy clips to put on, but other than that it was ready to go.

I really like the design of the handles – they can be folded almost flat to the machine, which means when it’s not being used through the colder months it can be stored away neatly. Most mowers have handles that can fold in the middle, but these can also be folded at the base with two quick adjustment knobs; just pull them out, then they snap back into position once the handles have been repositioned. When fully folded down its about 50cm high.

The 45-litre grass collection box comes assembled; to position it on the machine you must first lift the grass collector flap, then drop the connector hooks over the machine’s anchor points – very simple. There’s also a grass collector full indicator on the top of the box; this is raised during mowing until the collector is full; when full, the indicator drops flat.

To mulch the clippings, rather than collect, there’s a mulching plug included. Open the grass collector flap and push the plug into the back of the machine/grass chute; it drops into place quite easily, and it’s easy to remove.

Batteries and fast charger

The batteries and fast charger are included: 2x20v, 4.0Ah Li-ion. Both of these have to be used at the same time for the mower to work, and between them should give up to 50 minutes of run time, which will vary depending on the conditions and grass length.

The batteries have 3 LED lights on them to show the battery capacity; all 3 lights on show 70-100% charged, 2 lights show 35-70% charged, 1 light on 0-35% charged or depleted.

Charger – it has two slots allowing both batteries to be charged simultaneously; the minimum charge time for these batteries is stated as 100 minutes from completely discharged. The charger has a light for each battery to show either charging (red) or fully charged (green). The batteries slot onto the charger and click into place; press the battery release button to remove them.

To install the batteries into the mower – lift and hold up the battery cover, align the batteries with the grooves in the housing and slide them into place until they click.

To adjust the height of cut, there’s a single lever to select 6 different heights, the lowest being 25mm and the highest being 75mm.

The mower feels well-built and has a pleasing weight to it (approx. 19kg); if it were too lightweight, it wouldn’t achieve stripes on the lawn, but it’s by no means heavy to push. This is a push-mower and it’s recommended for medium-sized lawns; it rolls almost effortlessly on its 4 wheels, so no drive is needed.

All other rotary roller mowers I’ve used have had metal rollers – this one is plastic, but I feel sure it will do the job.

Mowing and performance 

This summer has, of course, been very dry for most of us gardeners, and the lawns have suffered. We aim to mow once a week but haven’t needed to, but we do have some areas of lawn that are still green; I’ve tested the mower on these areas.

First, I used the grass collector box and collected the clippings, then I mowed a larger area with the mulching plug-in to see how that performed.

Once the height of cut was selected and the batteries fully charged, I was ready to go. To start the mower, a button on the handle needs to be pressed in whilst the dead man’s handle is held in.

The stripes were certainly visible, and it was no effort to push or manoeuvre. The box collected well, and when getting near full it still wasn’t too heavy to push. Even when the grass isn’t growing strongly, there can still be various leaves and other garden debris lying on our lawns, and the mower cleared all of that away, giving the lawns a smarter appearance. I found the handle comfortable, and there are two different height selections for the handle position.

I swapped the collector box for the mulching plug, and again it worked well; the clippings seemed to disappear into the lawn so they weren’t left lying on the surface, and stripes were still present. The mulching function is ideal for the summer; it’s not meant to be used for cutting long grass but certainly through the dry summer months.

Verdict 

Overall I’m very pleased with the mower. I managed about an hour of mowing before the batteries were flat, and this is more than sufficient for most people’s lawns; for Barnsdale it’s a great mower for getting around the gardens with smaller lawns. Another bonus with a battery mower is that, compared to petrol machines, it’s much quieter, and compared to an electric mower there’s no cable or extension leads to worry about.

If you have a medium-sized lawn, want a battery-powered mower and would like some stripes, then this is well worth considering.
