Barnsdale Gardens – 2023 recap, what a year!
What an amazing year the Barnsdale Gardens team have had on their 40th anniversary!
It was in 1983, that Geoff Hamilton, the much-loved BBC Gardeners’ World presenter founded Barnsdale, in the East Midlands, hence cementing it as the new home of BBC Gardeners’ World at the time.
Nick Hamilton now continues his father’s legacy at the helm of the gardens and has kept them peat and chemical-free for the last three decades.
Rose ‘Geoff Hamilton’
This stunning rose was introduced by David Austin in 1997 and highlighted again to celebrate the Barnsdale anniversary through a 10% donation to the Greenfingers Charity for each rose sold in 2023.
The Geoff Hamilton Afternoon Tea
The Barnsdale team added the special ‘Geoff Hamilton Afternoon Tea’ to their menu at their Helenium Tea Room as part of their 40th Anniversary celebrations. The tea included Geoff’s favourites such as pork pies, sausage rolls and cheese straws. Mini sponge cakes, lemon possets & shortbreads, flowerpot choc-chip muffins & cheese scones.
BBC Gardeners’ World Live
The Barnsdale Gardens had a superb time bringing their 40th Anniversary celebrations to BBC Gardeners’ World Live. The display offered just a taste of all the show gardens at Barnsdale condensed into a fabulous showpiece that brought all of its 40-year history together.
Many visitors to the show who had never been to Barnsdale have been enthused to now make a trip and others who had been before have now been inspired to revisit again! The most popular plant at the show was Geranium ‘Ivan’ which even made it onto the TV with BBC Gardener’s World’s Carol Klein highlighting it on the special show episode.
Nick Hamilton also gave a presentation on the “Let’s Talk Plants” Stage in the Floral Marquee hosted by David Hurrion. Nick was also on hand to sell and sign many of his books ‘The Right Genes‘.
Barnsdale Gardens 40th Anniversary Garden Party
The special Barnsdale Gardens 40th Anniversary Garden Party in August was a super success. 144 partygoers came along to help the Barnsdale team celebrate the garden’s birthday this year and to raise funds for The Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice.
In true festival style, guests brought their own chairs, blankets and cushions and were able to enjoy delicious food from Farmer Lou and music from the singer Ann Duggan with Rob Hines on guitar.
Earlier in the day Barnsdale’s ‘Question Forum’ took place with Nick Hamilton and experts David Hurrion, Matthew Biggs and Barnsdale’s Head Gardener Jon Brocklebank answering an array of questions from those who attended.
