April gardening tips from Barnsdale Gardens
Hello April! After what feels like a long winter, spring has officially sprung. It’s full steam ahead for the team at Barnsdale Gardens in Rutland, where preparations are underway across the 38 individually designed gardens, ready for the busy season ahead. Why not take a leaf out of their gardening book and see which of the tips below could help your own garden burst into life?

Water Houseplants
Our houseplants are waking up and stretching after their winter nap. Now that they’re back in growth mode, you can start watering a little more; they’re getting thirsty and need the moisture to fuel all those new leaves.
But don’t go overboard! Think of it like offering them a nice drink, not dunking them in a swimming pool.
Spray Against Rose Black Spot
If you want to stay one step ahead of the dreaded rose black spot, it’s time to grab your spray bottle as soon as those fresh leaves start popping out. Think of it as putting sunscreen on your roses before they head out into the garden.
Because we like to keep things organic, we mix up a simple potion of skimmed milk and water, 10 parts water to 1 part milk. Yes, your roses are basically getting a light milkshake (but sadly, not the chocolate kind).
This mixture forms a protective barrier over the leaves, stopping those pesky black spot spores from settling in and making themselves at home. If rain comes along and washes it away, just spray again, your roses won’t mind the extra pampering.
Just remember: this is a preventative, not a miracle cure. So start early, stay consistent, and keep those roses looking fabulous instead of freckled!
Plant Those Potatoes!
It’s officially spud season, so grab your potatoes and get them tucked into bed. With a million and one vegetable jobs demanding attention, Susie, one of the team at Barnsdale Gardens, has developed a clever time-saving trick; she earths them up completely at planting time.
That way, she doesn’t have to keep popping back to fuss over them later (because let’s face it, the veg patch is already needy enough). The best part? It doesn’t seem to affect the harvest at all. Same potatoes, less hassle, and more time for Susie to tackle the rest of her ever-growing garden to-do list.
Work smarter, not harder…even the potatoes approve!
By taking care of these tasks now, you’ll create a thriving garden that flourishes all year long. Happy gardening!
There’s plenty to see and do all year round at Barnsdale Gardens!
