A healthy garden never rests, and October is no exception.

Preparing the Figs for Next Year
The gardeners have been out among the fig trees, carefully picking off any large fruits that have no chance of ripening before winter sets in. The smaller, pea-sized figs are left behind…tiny promises of next year’s delicious harvest.
Pulmonaria on the Move
Pulmonaria may be shy little spring stars, but they like to get settled in early. The team are dividing them now, so they’ll be ready to burst into bloom come February or March. Think of it as giving them a head start on their springtime show.
Comfrey’s Final Curtain Call
With the comfrey flowers well and truly spent, their nectar slurped up by grateful insects, it’s time for the plants to take a bow. The gardeners are making the final cut, adding the foliage to the compost heap (often in perfect sync with lawn-mowing days). Nothing goes to waste at Barnsdale!
Japanese Onions – The Next Generation
While most of us are tucking into hearty autumn stews, the Barnsdale team are already thinking of next summer’s onions. They’re sowing Japanese Onion seeds into modules filled with peat-free compost, snug in the cold greenhouse. Of course, a coldframe or even a sunny windowsill works too, a little DIY onion nursery.
Perennial Planning
Ever walked past a border in winter and thought, “Now, where on earth did that plant go?” The Barnsdale team are one step ahead, making notes now on perennials that need moving or dividing. Future selves will thank them when the borders are bare.
Quince Harvest
Meanwhile, the quince are ready for their moment of glory. Barnsdale grows both a stately quince tree and a compact multi-stem bush to show how it’s done, one for large gardens, one for smaller spaces. Whichever the form, the fruit is now ripe and begging to be picked.
There’s plenty to see and do all year round at Barnsdale Gardens!
