Beat the Bugs, Snip with Style, and Feast from the Plot

Beat the Bugs, Snip with Style, and Feast from the Plot: The Barnsdale Gardens team are raring to go this June! With so many events happening this month they have to make sure that the gardens in Rutland are looking their absolute best! Events taking place include Barnsdale Gardens After Hours, Father’s Day Brunch and Family Nature Trail, Nursery Walk & Talk, ‘Filling the Spring into Summer Planting Gap’ and more!

Summer is knocking at the garden gate, and the team are rolling up their sleeves at Barnsdale Gardens! June is all about smart moves, snappy pruning, and a bit of bug-busting brilliance, and trust us, the plants will thank you for it. Here’s what we, and you, can get up to this month:

Zap Those Aphids – the Eco Way!

Roses may be red, but aphids are uninvited. These tiny sap-suckers adore those juicy new shoots, so the team fight back with their favourite green trick: a squirt of eco-friendly washing-up liquid in water (about a teaspoon to 3 litres). Spray early, spray often (every 7–10 days), and you’ll stop those aphids before they lay eggs and throw a garden party.

Lily Beetle: Catch the Crimson Culprit!

They’re bright red, cheeky, and totally destructive…lily beetles are out in force thanks to the warmer season. Keep your eyes peeled every time you wander past your lilies. Spot one? Squash one! And don’t let their grubby little offspring (those orange, gooey larvae) get away either. Vigilance is victory!

Chop-Chop Cherry Time

Flowering cherries may have done their showy thing, but now’s the moment to get in there with the secateurs. Prune right after flowering while they’re actively growing as it helps them heal fast and avoids the dreaded silver leaf fungus. Clean cuts, happy trees!

Tulip TLC – Deadhead for Next Year’s Dazzle
Once your tulips have finished strutting their stuff, it’s time for a tidy-up. Snip off those spent flower stalks (as far down as you can without harming the leaves) to stop the plant wasting energy on seeds. Next spring’s bloom will thank you with gusto.

Artichoke Anticipation – Pick While Perfect!

The globe artichokes are nearly ready to steal the culinary spotlight – but don’t let them get too big or they’ll turn into garden thugs! Harvest when they’re just right for your recipe of the day. Tender hearts only, please.

Broad Bean Boost – Pinch for Power!

Want plump pods and juicy beans? When your broad beans start to show tiny pods at the base, pinch out those tender growing tips. Bonus: they’re delicious steamed! This trick also fends off pesky blackfly, so everyone wins.

At Barnsdale Gardens, June is buzzing…literally and metaphorically. Come and explore the magic: there’s always something blooming, buzzing or bursting with flavour. Whether you’re a green-fingered guru or just garden-curious, there’s something here to inspire you.

There’s plenty to see and do all year round at Barnsdale Gardens!
