STIGA celebrate 90 years since it was founded
STIGA celebrate 90 years since it was founded: November 19th is International Men’s Day and the STIGA team thought this would be the ideal time to focus more on the founder of this wonderful gardening company, Stig Hjelmquist.
This year the theme of International Men’s Day is ‘Positive Male Role Models’, which highlights positive role models and raises awareness of men’s well-being.
Stig was a visionary businessman whose passion for innovation transformed outdoor living and working. Born in 1911, he honed his skills in a German general store and later studied business at Påhlmans Handelsinstitut in Stockholm, laying a solid foundation for his future endeavours.
In 1934, at just twenty-three, Stig founded Fabriksprodukter, which would evolve into the internationally recognised Stiga AB. Remarkably, among his first products were surfboards and kayaks, showcasing his forward-thinking approach.
By 1938, STIGA made waves in the market by introducing its first products, establishing a foothold as an international brand. Initially, they imported ping-pong and badminton equipment from England; however, wartime disruptions posed challenges to supply.
In the 1950s, Stig’s commitment to growth took him across the Atlantic, where he forged vital relationships with suppliers. During a pivotal 1954 trip, he discovered a motor lawnmower that would go on to become a best-seller and a hallmark of his company’s success.
In 1978, after 44 impressive years as CEO, Stig Hjelmquist stepped aside, but the legacy of STIGA endures. Today, the company is celebrated for its superior quality and innovative designs in garden tools and mowers, proving that Stig’s vision continues to inspire excellence in outdoor living.
STIGA is now celebrating its 90th anniversary, with initiatives such as the We Care, That You Care campaign, where the company is supporting 90 community garden groups by donating products to them. The innovation at STIGA also continues today in the form of exceptional products such as its robot mowers, battery ride-on mowers and battery technology.
