We Need Your Support: Barnsdale Gardens has been a leader in peat-free and chemical-free gardening since its founding in 1983 by Geoff Hamilton, the beloved presenter of BBC’s Gardeners’ World. Geoff Hamilton was a strong advocate and pioneer of organic gardening, and Barnsdale has served as his “great experiment” in sustainable growing practices. For over forty years, these techniques and principles have been utilised at Barnsdale, located in the East Midlands, and the gardens remain a remarkable example of organic gardening.

The Barnsdale team takes pride in hosting Britain’s largest collection of individually designed gardens, spread across eight acres of land. They are committed to sustainable energy; however, they are concerned about the potential damage to their diverse and beautiful flora and fauna from a proposed solar farm.  If this farm goes ahead it will signal the closure of the much-loved gardens.

This solar farm is planned for the 81 hectares of fields adjacent to Barnsdale. The constant noise from the motorised panels tracking the sun would disrupt the rich wildlife habitat and detract from the peaceful experience of visitors to the gardens. Additionally, the solar panels, standing three metres high, would overshadow the gardens, replacing the stunning green fields and beautiful blue sky that are currently part of the landscape.

Nick Hamilton, son of Geoff Hamilton and owner of Barnsdale Gardens stated, “While renewable energy is essential, it’s crucial to consider finding a more appropriate location for this solar farm. Doing so would help preserve my fathers legacy as a valuable local resource for nature and tranquility.  If the solar farm does go ahead, I will have no other option than to close Barnsdale Gardens.
