We are seeking an experienced and inspiring individual to lead the Gardens and Landscape and Grounds team at Bolton Abbey Estate.
You will oversee the management, conservation, and future development of a diverse and historically significant landscape,
ensuring exceptional standards are delivered for the enjoyment of visitors, tenants, and the family.
What you’ll do
As Head of Gardens & Landscape, you will be responsible for leading the day-to-day management and long-term vision of the estate’s gardens and designed landscapes.
General responsibilities include:
* Leadership and team management – Lead, motivate, and develop the gardens and landscape team, ensuring high standards and effective collaboration across the estate.
* Landscape management and horticulture – Oversee maintenance and presentation to the highest standards, including propagation, seasonal work, and supply of produce and flowers.
* Strategy and development – Support long-term landscape, conservation, and biodiversity plans, managing projects and budgets to agreed standards.
* Visitor experience and collaboration – Work with the tourism and events teams to enhance access, support events, and improve the visitor experience.
* Compliance and safety – Ensure health and safety compliance across all operations, including risk management, contractors, and overall wellbeing.

We are looking for a passionate and knowledgeable leader with a strong background in horticulture and landscape management. You will bring energy, creativity, and a commitment to excellence.
The ideal candidate will:
* Be hands-on, proactive, and solutions-focused with a “can-do” approach.
* Demonstrate strong horticultural knowledge and an understanding of heritage landscapes and biodiversity.
* Have proven experience managing teams within a large estate, garden, or landscape setting.
* Have experience managing budgets, projects, and contractors.
* Be a confident communicator, able to build relationships with a wide range of stakeholders.
* Possess relevant qualifications in horticulture or demonstrate equivalent experience.
* Have a sound understanding of health and safety requirements.
You will be highly organised, professional, and committed to maintaining the estate’s reputation for quality and innovation.
