Gardens galore for discerning dads: Dads just love coming to Barnsdale Gardens as a Father’s Day treat, who wouldn’t relish exploring thirty-eight individually designed gardens, each one offering its own special ambience?

All of the gardens at Barnsdale are splendid in the month of June, offering a fine array of colour, texture and scents.  Many were designed by Geoff Hamilton, the much-loved TV presenter and father of now-owner Nick Hamilton, who was way ahead of his time and a strong believer and pioneer in peat-free and chemical-free growing. These techniques have been continued and the gardens at Barnsdale remain an outstanding example of these organic principles.

For those who remember ‘The People’s Gardener’, the appropriately named The Gentleman’s Garden was designed for the BBC television series, Geoff Hamilton’s Cottage Gardens. It illustrates the perfect way to deal with an area that is wider than it is deep. The garden was recreated at the 1995 Gardeners’ World Live Exhibition as the main feature garden.

If your papa is a keen plantsman, then as the name suggests, The Plantsman’s Garden features some of the more uncommon and harder-to-find species of plants that will inspire him. The pergola was introduced to give height and interest, with the pebble water feature adding that all-important relaxing acoustic
