Gardener
Painshill
A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a passionate and enthusiastic hands-on gardener to assist in the continuing maintenance and restoration of a beautiful Grade I eighteenth century English landscape garden in Surrey. The garden is set in a wooded valley and covers 160 acres with a serpentine lake, Chinese bridge, walled garden, vineyard, ruined abbey, Turkish tent and a remarkable grotto. The restoration of the garden began in the 1980s with the aim to restore this “living work of art” and now is enjoyed by approximately 200,000 visitors a year.
This role is hands-on and you will assist in ensuring that the garden and surroundings are maintained to a high standard. This role will include a range of practical horticultural tasks to develop, enhance and conserve the garden and contribute to the delivery of projects. There will be elements of hard and soft landscaping and general maintenance of the garden, such as mulching, pruning, leaf clearing and weeding. In addition, you will be assisting with the planting and maintenance of vegetables, vines, annuals, trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants.
As a member of the team you will also support volunteers/students and help them to make the most of their time in the garden. You will be expected to interact with the public on a daily basis. On occasions, you will also assist with gardening workshops, tours and the setting up/taking down of events equipment.
Candidates must be positive in their approach and comfortable with participating in garden activities, events and interaction with visitors. Candidates should be aware of the physical nature of the position, and of the requirement to work in all weather conditions. This post also requires the use of garden machinery and may involve some working at heights.
This role entails working in areas which are open to the public with potential for coming into contact with children and vulnerable adults. An application for a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check will be applied for on behalf of the successful candidate.
